Underneath John Lautner’s 1962 architectural spacecraft, unique hand-sourced dreamy  botanicals are sprouting -  layering  down the side of the canyon in an assortment of  shady ancient leaf specimens to full-sun desert cactus and agave rarities. Mythologically placed to unfold with time,  each plant family is designed to  hatch into massive, whimsical sculptures framing the house to the earth. Custom-designed art  installations inspire conceptualized story-telling of lost planets and primitive  shapes jutting up from the solid ground.

When Actor Charlie Carver first reached out to Designer John Sharp to reimagine his overgrown Silverlake backyard, the two aligned over the idea of Coastal Northern California meets Rustic New World.

Studio John Sharp created a three-tiered lush escape with places to gather, dine, lounge and wander. Charlie played a vital role in collaborating on the botanical story that compelled him personally from childhood memories, travels, and new inspiration.


The completed exterior renovation reads as a gentle oasis and evokes a sense of sophisticated wonder, both considered and natural.

Charlie Carver’s Silverlake Oasis

Imagined as a magical retreat through the eyes of two young children, Studio John Sharp transformed this tucked away garden and balcony into an enchanting cohesive escape, with places to explore, discover, and experience.

Using modern lines in the architecture and incorporating woodland botanical specimens, the Studio  was able to tell a story and create a journey that unites  a landscape experience with the sacredness of the ancients.

Uniting a  team of collaborators, Sophia reached out to Studio John Sharp  as her choice for all things that grow.

Studio John Sharp brought to life an experimental utopia intended to teleport visitors into a world where the past and the future coalesce, with a  focus on jungle and jurassic foliage, as well as natural and  surprising  places to gather and connect.
